One of the largest gambrel roof houses in Rhode Island, the Joseph Jenckes house stands four-square on its corner site. Joseph Jenckes, himself a solid and four-square merchant is believed to have participated in the secret group that burned the British revenue schooner HMS Gaspee, in 1772, an act considered by many to mark the true beginning of the Revolution. The front porch and rear wing were later additions to the house. The porch was removed in a recent renovation.
This extensive set of 17 drawing sheets includes a site plan, 4 floor plans, 2 elevations, 2 sections and 8 sheets of exquisite details of interior and exterior construction, including doors, windows, trim, cornices, stairs and more. The original drawings rest in the Library of Congress.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. Built over a full basement the first floor comprises 5 rooms wrapping around a central chimney core. The kitchen and 2 of the rooms are large. One of the smaller rooms could easily serve as a first floor bedroom, while the other small room could be joined to the kitchen to make a family room or breakfast area. The second floor plan matches the first, with 5 rooms. The gambrel roofed attic provides a third floor almost as large as the others. Although ideal for a flat site, these plans would also work on a moderately sloping one, possibly allowing for a walk-out basement. This house would be comfortable in a suburban or country setting. Excluding the later additions, the main house has outside dimensions of approximately 30’x40’.
Please visit my other auctions for many other drawings I am offering. I have house plans in wide variety of styles including Colonial, Craftsman, and Prairie, as well as plans of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Irving Gill, Purcell & Elmslie and others.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD:
These plans are not complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL historic house, not a pseudo-historic tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
The original drawings from which these dimensionally accurate scans were made are kept at the Historic American Building Survey, in the Library of Congress.
